Aren't Some People Lovely?

I have recently found an blog called Oklahoma Hippy - with lots of good stuff there. One recent post links to Agape Press - "Reliable News From A Christian Source". Apparently one pastor, Rev. Bill Shanks of New Covenant Fellowship of New Orleans , seems really glad about what's happened to New Orleans:

“New Orleans now is abortion free. New Orleans now is Mardi Gras free. New Orleans now is free of Southern Decadence and the sodomites, the witchcraft workers, false religion -- it's free of all of those things now," Shanks says. "God simply, I believe, in His mercy purged all of that stuff out of there -- and now we're going to start over again."

Will this chap get to heaven?

During the Crusades, there was a famous quote "Neca eos omnes. Deus suos agnoset", or "Kill them all, God will know his own".

Clearly some Christians have never progressed beyond the dark ages.

Hopefully only a tiny minority.

I have quite a few good Christian friends - I'm not trying to engage in some kind of anti-religious rant.

But I was so infuriated by this guy.

I agree. I have friends from many faiths, however it is the anti-humanity extremists that make my blood boil.

But I think that there are many people who think that because their local vicar is generally a nice chap, and they were at church last year for a friend's wedding, that somehow Christians are a mild and moderate bunch who don't have extremist wings.

Yet whether it's the Crusades, the Inquisition or people like Rev. Bill Shanks, certain corners of Christianity are just as guilty of extremism as the tiny minority of Islamic Clerics can be accused of. It's just that the press doesn't like to point it out.

That sort of thinking is appaling to that "brand" of Christianity. Unfortunately, this "far right" babble is what people associate with the faith as a whole, and it simply isn't so. Thank God.
