Thanks Coalition, Thanks Lynne

I'm quite chuffed to see the announcement that wheel clamping on private land is going to be banned in England and Wales. In the past year or so I've heard of cases in Rayleigh where someone has been charged about 200 pounds extra, just for paying by card. And I've seen instances where the vehicle was apparently parked on the public highway, and still got clamped.

So well done - especially to Lynne Featherstone, the Lib Dem minister overseeing this.

I hope you are not, in your support of this proposal, implying that motorists should have some divine right to park wherever they feel like it - irrespective of who owns the land, whether they are causing an obstruction etc. Some drivers are incredibly selfish and appear to give no thought whatsoever to anyone else's needs or rights

No, I don't think that motorists have a right - let alone a divine right - to park on someone else's land.

But - to take one example- one of my residents, not in a highly paid job, visiting some sheltered housing apartments for half an hour one wet evening, trying to minimise his walk in the rain, is forced to pay over 400 pounds for parking on a piece of concrete that used to be the forecourt of a local tyre business before it closed down.

That's not just.
